#teamnatural What’s your Regimen??

I have been natural for over 2 years!  I had this realization the other day and couldn’t believe it.  It really feels like yesterday that I just decided I didn’t want anymore chemicals in my hair.  I kind was like what’s the point?  My hair isn’t going to be super long without a weave and you can’t even hve the windows down on a nice day when your hair is done.  Forget it.  Plus I saw Good Hair, when that man took the can out of the main ingredient of a relaxer I was DONE.

And what’s funny I haven’t realized until recently how many people actually come up to me or ask me what my hair regimen is.  I’m always like “I don’t know I just went natural a few months ago, but that isn’t the case.  I guess I do have a bit of a regimen.  So for those that have asked or are just plain curious, here’s what I do with bullets of course (disclaimer I think some of these tips can be used by anyone trying to have healthier hair):

  1. I use sulfate free shampoo, my favorites are Kinky curly’s and Miss Jesse’s moisturizing shampoo.  I only wash once a month.  Sounds gross but wait until the next bullet….
  2. Every week I co-wash.  This is using conditioner to wash.  I just make sure I really massage the conditioner into my scalp.  This technique I learned on my favorite natural hair blog, curly nikki.  Go check her out here.  She has so many good tips.  h
  3. After co-washing I deep condition, there has to be a really good reason for me NOT to deep condition.  Right now I use Miss Jesse’s rapid recovery.   I sit under a dryer and everything for the 30 minutes.
  4. once I’m done, I don’t use a regular towel.  I use a microfiber towel or turbo twist.  It’s doesn’t dry your hair out like cotton does.
  5. Then because I’ve discovered I have a lot of shrinkage (that’s what he said lol) I blow dry out my hair before twisting it.  I do it on low heat.  And I always add a moisturizer before drying and a ton of moisturizer post drying.  My fave for this step is darcy botanicals Avocado and Honey twisting cream.  My hair LOVES IT.  Get it HERE!!
  6. Once I’m all moistured up, I proceed to styling.  I’ma  2 strand twist girl.  I don’t really venture out of that style.  It works for me.  🙂  I usually do add some rods at the ends to have some more curl definition.  I use miss jessie’s curly pudding which I apply to each section.  I don’t drench it because that would defeat the whole drying process.  But i try to coat the hair.  Then I hit my hair up with my version of a holding agent.  I was using Aveda’s defining whip but I have since found some stuff in my local whole foods that I like too.  I forgot the name…I’ll add it later.  Once both products are applied I twist.
  7. I twist kind of small so I end up with like 40 or so twists.  and I roll them about 3-4 twists per rod.  Then I put on my bonnet and I go to sleep.
  8. For the first 2 days I wear my hair with the curly twists.  It’s hella easy and its protective.  On day 3 I undo them once.  Day 3 is also when I use a little oil when I am untwisting.  Day four I just leave them out.  Every night I sleep with my bonnet.  The night of Day 4 is when I twist in bigger sections and then tie down my hair with a satin scarf.  Again I use a little oil to untwist and voila.  For the next 2 days I just let my hair do what it does until it’s hair washing day
  9. OH And every 6 weeks I do a henna treatment but that’s a whole different post.  🙂

There it is…My regimen.

Below is a pic of me from last night…Day 4.  This week I styled it doing a few flat twists into bantu knots on one side.

What’s your hair regimen?

  1. WHEW! I must admit that I was a bit overwhelmed by all of the steps involved with maintenance process. But I’m sure once you get used to the routine, its not that bad. I’m glad that you have found the products and the regimen that work best for you. And if the pics above are any indication, then you have DEFINITELY made the right decision to go natural. Keep on doing your thing, Mz. Gena:)

    1. Thanks KD. I must admit I’m still trying to get used to it. And It’s like I tell everyone who asks, being natural isn’t easy. Sheesh.
